Toddler and Preschool Program

Arena utilizes the exciting multi-age teaching strategy for its toddler and preschool aged program. Our toddlers and preschool children are grouped together during their time at the center. This teaching style encourages children to work cooperatively with each other. The older children teach, share, and model to their younger peers, while they develop greater responsibility as older members of the group. We find that the younger children really enjoy having older peers to look up to and learn from and the children benefit in experiencing leadership.

Another positive aspect of our program is the ability of the teachers to better meet the needs of the individual student. Because of the design of the classroom group, teachers are able to work in small groups on different curriculum tasks. For instance, while the younger children are exploring the different learning centers throughout the room, the older children can practice writing or reading skills with the teacher. Conversely, while the older children enjoy building in the block area, the younger children can learn scissor and glue skills with the teacher at the art table. In this way, the teacher can better meet the individual student's needs by working with same developmental groups. This allows for more individual instruction. Our children to staff ratio is 7:1.

Arena prides itself of preparing children to enter elementary school. For this reason, child are expected to participate in daily circle activities, art projects, learning centers, and large motor activities – we try to go outside to play on the playground equipment each day, weather permitting. In this way, children are accustomed to attending and participating in learning activities throughout the days.

Arena provides a thorough learning curriculum designed to prepare the youngsters for elementary school. Children experience different exciting learning themes throughout the year, designed to teach them basic readiness skills for kindergarten. They are introduced to colors, shapes, numbers, letter recognition, first letter sounds, pre-reading skills, letter writing formation and other pre-Kindergarten skills. Different hands-on teaching methods are used to engage and excite youngsters. Kids learn best if they are involved and having fun.

Teachers keep open lines of communication between themselves and their children's parents and guardians. A daily "All about my day" sheet is completed by the teacher to let parents know how their child's day was and what activities their youngster participated in. Weekly and monthly calendars are prepared to inform parents of weekly themes and special events. Additionally, teacher/parent conferences are scheduled to share individual academic and social progress with parents.
